MODULE 1 : GETTING READY TO LEARN
MAKING THE TRANSITION
When we graduated from school, we should know on how to change our styles in study, life and time management. We must change our lifestyle to suit the new life in the university such as the new environment, new friends, new lifestyle and so on. Here are the differences between the school and the university:
Differences between school life and university
From all those differences, I know that moving from school life to university is not an easy thing at all. So we as students need to prepare our physical and mental to pursue our life correctly when we are in the university.
LEARNING STYLES & CHARACTERISTIC OF SUCCESSFUL STUDENT
Different Types of Learning Method
ACTIVITY 1 : IDENTIFY YOUR LEARNING STYLE (e-Portfolio)
- With answering the question that have been prepared by Dr. Mohamad Syafie in the website http://www.educationplanner.org/students/self-assessments/learning-styles-quiz.shtml , the score that I got from it is
- Auditory : 35%
- Visual : 40%
- Tactile : 25%
From the result above, I have knew that I am a visual learner. I learn by reading or seeing pictures. I understand and remember things by sight. I can picture picture what I learning in my head, and I learn best by using methods that are primarily visual. I like to see what what I am learning.
Here are some things to do to improve my learning as a visual learner :
~Sit near the front of the classroom.
~Have my eyesight checked on a regular basis.
~Use flashcards to learn new words.
~Try to visualize things that I hear or things that are read to me.
~Write down key words, ideas, or instructions.
~Color code things.
~Avoid distractions during study times.

MODULE 2 : GOAL SETTING AND MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
"Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the invisible"
By : Anthony Robbins
Definition of goal:
Goal is the thing that you want to achieve on your life. Goal is very important to motivate us whether in studying or working.
Another definition of goals:
~The object of the person's effort
~Goals are the ends toward we direct our effort
~In other words, goals are the things we want to achieve
~Like us, we need 'niat' (attention)

~Like us, we need 'niat' (attention)
ACTIVITY 2 : MANAGING YOUR GOAL
We have asked by Dr. Syafie to set our own goals, obstacles and the way to achieve it.
#SETYOURGOALSTOACHIEVEYOURDREAMS#
MODULE 3 : TIME MANAGEMENT
Time management is the process of organizing and planning on how to divide your time between specific activities. Good time management enables you to work smarter - not harder - so that you can done in less time, even when time is tight and pressures are high. Time management can also make you spend more time with your friends, family, and work out.
In order to manage your time wisely, you should know about :
~Priorities the most urgent task
~Have a schedule to manage your time
~Ask advice from lecturer or friends on how to manage our time
~Paying attention to deadline and ways to solve it
~Have a schedule to manage your time
~Ask advice from lecturer or friends on how to manage our time
~Paying attention to deadline and ways to solve it
Procrastination
Procrastination is an action of avoiding and postponing what should be taking of now. This action can rob you of your time and detail your intentions.
Common Reasons Why People Procrastination
~Being a perfectionist
~Avoiding failure
~Avoiding success
~Being rebellious
~Feeling overwhelmed
~Being lazy
ACTIVITY 3 : PERSONAL SCHEDULE
We have given a task to create a weekly schedule as being shown below.
ACTIVITY 4 : MANAGING SO MUCH WORK
By using the schedule in Activity 3, we need to identify the important of each activity.
Indicator :
White : Not urgent and not important
Blue : Urgent but not important
Yellow : Important but not urgent
Red : Urgent and important

MODULE 5 : MEMORY LEARNING & IMPROVING CONCENTRATION
From Google Image
In this topic, we have been explained by Dr. Agustono Wibowo that memory learning is very important for us to remember things. At first, we need to understand the meaning of memory.
For this activity, Dr. Agus asked us to answer this question to know about our memory strategies are good or not.
From the lecture, I understand how information is learned and to understand the needs of using various kind of active learning strategies in learning, retaining and using the information (encoding, storage and retrieval) and hence, indicates how one learns, remembers and forgets.
Actually, do we know what is memory? What is brain? Memory is the retention of the time or the mind store and remember information. The brain is the organ, like computer software.
Actually, do we know what is memory? What is brain? Memory is the retention of the time or the mind store and remember information. The brain is the organ, like computer software.
From the pyramid above, we actually can remember
- 5% of lecture
- 10% of reading
- 20% from audio/visual
- 50% from discussion group
- 75% from practice by doing
- 90% when teach teach others
The Storage (Retaining Information)
There are THREE types of memory :
- Sensory Memory (SM) : Numerous incoming information from 5 senses will be stored in the sensory memory for an instant. If we DO pay attention to the stimuli, it will go to the short-term memory (STM) but if we DO NOT pay attention, the the information will be lost.
- Short-Term Memory (STM) : A very limited storage. From the SM, information will be relayed to the STM. Information must be REHEARSED/REPEATED or use SOME ACTIVE LEARNING strategies in order to get information to LTM otherwise information will be lost.
- Long-Term Memory (LTM) : This is unlimited and large storage. From STM, information moved to LTM and stored here for later use and if the information is not being used for some time, forgetting may occur.
We have been asked to write down as many numbers on the slideshow that we can memorize in just 5 seconds. My mistake for not paying attention about the task and the result proved me that I bad in memorizing :`)
Memory Strategies
How Forgetting Could Occur :
- Did not pay attention to the information
- Did not understand the information
- Cramming (last minute study)
- Did not have good strategies
- Interference (having two exams on the same day and the subjects are closely related)
- Test anxiety (have negative thought)
- Spaced study - Involves space time over some period of time for studying. Spaced practice or distributed practice allows time for the information to consolidate in the long-term memory.
- Break reading material down - For some period of time, such as 2 chapters per day.
- Rehearsal - Repeat the information many times as example repeat a notes 10 times
- Elaboration strategies like associations, acronyms, acrostics, imagery, organizational strategies and comprehension monitoring strategies.
Concentration - Focusing your attention on what you are doing
Strategies to Improve Concentration
Cause of Poor Concentration :
- Lack of attention
- Lack of interest
- Lack of motivation
- Uncomfortable environment
- Distraction from people
- Physiological matters (illness, tiredness)
- Psychological matters (personal problem, worries, anxiety)
Strategies to Improve Concentration
- Use motivational and organizational strategies
- Create a positive learning environment
- Deal with internal distractions
- Match your learning style to the task
- Use active learning strategies
- Monitor your concentration
The lecturer asked us to do a concentration chart as shown below
MODULE 6 : TAKING LECTURE NOTES
Why we need to take lecture notes?
- Because we may forget about the lecture about
- Students can recall about 80% of a lecture if they review their notes
- Physical writing activates regions of the brain
- Help us to revise when exam
1. Prepare Before Taking Notes
The best way to prepare your note-taking activity is to READ the text assignment BEFORE CLASS. It will allow you to
- build up some background about the topic
- have some idea what the lecture is about
- identify main ideas of the lecture and organize your notes easier
- be familiar with with the key terms and names related to the topic
- Review the notes from the day before
- Review your reading assignment
- Make sure you have paper, text, handout, pencils
2. Become An Active Listener
Strategies for improving listening skills
- Read the text assignment before the lecture to build background on the topic
- Review your last set of notes before the lecture begins
- Sit in the lecture`s line of vision
- Decide what you want to listen
- Focus your attention physically by sitting up and making eye contact with the speaker
- Focus your attention mentally by eliminating or avoiding distractions
- Listen with an open mind, setting your own biased
- Control your emotional responses
- Listen for the main points and related details and take notes
- Ask and answer questions
- Monitor your listening. Check with the lecturer or a classmate (at the end of the lecture) if you are unsure of some of the information
- Date and label notes
- Gives ourselves space to write
- Use abbreviations and symbols
- Use your own language
3. Effective Note-Taking System
- The Cornell Method
- Informal Outline
- The Block Method
- Modified Block Method
- Mapping Method
ACTIVITY 9 : TAKING NOTES USING CORNELL/BLOCK/OUTLINING/MAPPING METHOD
We need to make a note about the topic that have shown to us during the lecture using one of the method. I use the Cornell Method but my notebook is small so I have to make it into two pages.
MODULE 7 : ACADEMIC INTEGRITY & PERFORMANCE
Avoiding Plagiarism
Many students are unintentionally guilty of plagiarism when they write reports, assignments and research papers.
Plagiarism : An act of using or closely imitating the language and thoughts of another author without authorization and the representation of that author`s work as one`s own, as by not crediting the original author.
These are considered as plagiarism :
- turning in someone else`s work as your own
- copying words or ideas from someone else without giving credit
- failing to put a quotation in quotation marks
- giving incorrect information about the source of a question
- changing words but copying the sentence structure of a source without giving credit
- copying so many words or ideas from a source that it makes up the majority of your work, whether you give credit or not
1. Planning your paper
i) Consult your Instructor/Lecturer
ii) Plan your paper
iii) Take effective notes
2. Writing your paper
i) Cite sources
ii) Make it clear who said it
iii) Know how to paraphrase
iv) Evaluate your sources
v) Include a reference page
Calculating Grade Point Average
A Grade Point Average (GPA) refers to the calculated average of the letter grades a student earns in each semester following a 0 to 4.0 scale.
Failure and Dismissal
ACTIVITY 10 : CALCULATING CGPA
2. Calculate what would have happened if Amelia had earned B in Chemistry.
Her CGPA will 3.06
3. What is the difference in GPA?
3.06 - 2.75
= 0.31
5. What would happened if Amelia had received a D in Cell Bio instead of B?
Her GPA will drop to 2.28
6. What is the difference in GPA?
2.80 - 2.28
= 0.52
7. What is the difference in CGPA?
CGPA semester 2 - CGPA semester 1
= 2.77 - 2.75
= 0.02
8. What does Amelia have to do in order to achieve a GPA of 3.00 in the 2nd semester if her CGPA falls below 2.50 in the 1st semester?
Amelia must score at least B in Intro Physics and Writing in Biology.
That is all from me right now. I hope you guys enjoyed it!
